2008-10-31 During the month October, Alcoans worldwide took part in the Alcoa Foundation Month of Service. Of course also the Belgian Alcoans pitched in!
On Saturday, October 11, a group of 14 Alcoans from the Alcoa Wheel Products Europe offices in Paal Belgium teamed up to help the Nature NGO 'Natuurpunt' clean up the 'Munsterbos'. The Munsterbos is a forest in the North East part of Belgium. This forest is quite special for the region because it consists of various ecological micro systems all in one forest. The soil goes from clay to sand and the vegetation ranges from shrubs and bushes to large trees.
The Alcoa group helped the volunteers of Natuurpunt, who typically work in the forest every Saturday (!!), to clear out old wood and trees that are not part of the original vegetation. This is part of a multi year program of the NGO to restore the forest to its original set up of before the 1950's when foreign tree and shrub species were introduced to the area. Species that through the years have started dominating the forest grounds and slowly pushed out the original vegetation.
After a morning of hard, but fun, work in great weather conditions the Alcoa team had not only been able to clean up a fair area and put the Alcoa Month of Service into practice but also presented a $ 3,000 Action! check to contribute to the good work of the Natuurpunt volunteers.
In total, worldwide, over 17,000 Alcoa employees took part in more than 450 activities in 25 countries.
