Helping 'Het Hoeveke'

On October 13, 16 (out of a total Alcoa population of approx. 30!) Belgium based Alcoans teamed up to help the handicapped of the day care centre 'Het Hoeveke' in Lummen. The Alcoa team, consisting of employees of the AFL warehouse in Brussels and the Wheels location in Paal helped straighten the pavements, cut the grass, clean the windows, do very creative paintworks and a load of other small (and big…) tasks to get the newly built buildings of the day care centre in good shape for a grand opening of the centre in the weekend of October 19-20.

Het Hoeveke has been active for many years in the town of Lummen and offers a variety of work and educational activities for a large group of mentally and physically challenged people in the wider Lummen region. After years of lobbying with the local government, citizens and searching for funding and sponsorships the Hoeveke management was able to relocate and have a new centre built. Obviously the Hoeveke team and especially its clients are very happy with and proud of their new 'home', but at the same time they were facing a deadline to get everything in shape for the grand, formal opening….. With the help of an extremely motivated Alcoa crew the work, that usually would have taken several weeks with only few volunteers, was done. The Alcoa Month of Service team came and delivered….. At the end of the day not only a clean, proper and nicely decorated day care centre was left behind, but a $ 3,000 Alcoa Foundation Action check as well...!
